ELEMENTS OF PICTURES

Short for Picture Element, a pixel is a single point in a graphic image. Computer monitors display pictures by dividing the display screen into thousands (or millions) of pixels, arranged in rows and columns. This inherent grid structure, which makes up so much of our visual experiece but remains hidden or in the far background, has been at the heart of my experimentation for the past 25 years.

As can be seen in Technology Experiments, my interest in intersecting verticals and horizontals, (the use of the loom and the photo-representation of woven cloth) as well as a drive to experiment with analog technologies, to use tools in ways they were not intended to be used, preceded the computer based work.

Within the grid structure, most of the work relies on chance, on random bits of information observed, and appreciated.
